Back to school shopping with Tax Free Weekend

Alabama Revenue Commissioner Julie P. Magee reminds shoppers that beginning this Friday, August 1, through Sunday, August 3, many necessary school items will be exempt from the state’s four percent sales tax.

If the shoppers’ cities and counties are participating this year, local sales taxes will also be exempt on the designated items.

“This is the perfect opportunity for parents to purchase needed supplies and get a tax break,” says Magee. “It is a win‐win situation for parents, all shoppers, and the retailers, who will see consumers buying non‐exempt items as well.”

Some of the exempt items include clothing priced at $100 or less per item, school supplies priced at less than $50 per item and computers, software and computer items costing up to $750 per item.

Here is a cheat sheet from the Alabama Revenue Department.
