Maren Morris's 'The Middle' Was Almost Sung by Demi Lovato

The song that’s now a three-week No. 1 at pop radio almost didn’t get its country vocalist.

Maren Morris was ultimately chosen to take the lead on “The Middle,” but the song almost went to Demi Lovato, Camila Cabello, Bebe Rexha, Julia Michaels and no fewer than 8 other top female singers.

“I didn’t really know about all the drama finding a vocalist,” Maren tells The New York Times of the collaboration between EDM DJ-producers Zedd and duo Grey.

After a slew of back-and-forth with vocalists, Maren delivered “the best [rendition] yet, no question,” says production team Monsters & Strangerz’ Marcus “Marc Lo” Lomaz.

“It sounded a little Nashville and felt right. We were pumped,” he added.

After a year of struggles getting it off the ground, “The Middle” premiered in a January Target commercial during the 60th Grammy Awards.

It’s since reached the top of the Billboard Pop Songs chart for three weeks running.
