Utility Companies initiate Voluntary Curtailment

Due to the extremely cold temperatures across the Tennessee Valley, the TVA will initiate Valley-wide voluntary curtailment of energy usage starting at 3pm and lasting until further notice. This curtailment will be especially important during the peak hours of 5:00-9:00AM and 6:00-10:00PM.

Huntsville Utilities is asking customers to keep electric usage at an absolute minimum, eliminating any unnecessary electric operations such as lights, laundry, or any other electric appliance that aggravates the already high demand on the electric distribution system.

Taking these steps will help avoid any service outages and reduce the very high demand being placed on the electric transmission and distribution systems.

A few suggestions for reducing your energy consumption during this time are:

Turn your thermostat down a couple of degrees.

Turn off extra lights that are not needed.

Put off running the washer, dryer, and dishwasher.

Cook using the microwave instead of the oven.

Unplug any un-used electronic devices which still draw a "phantom load" when not in use.

“We want to thank each of you for assisting both Joe Wheeler EMC and TVA by reducing your electric consumption during this cold weather,” said JWEMC General Manager, George Kitchens.

Joe Wheeler EMC is an electric cooperative providing reliable electric service to more than 43,000 homes and businesses across Lawrence and Morgan Counties in Northwest Alabama for 80 years.
