Detroit Truckers Come to the Aid of a Man Threatening Suicide

I-696 is a highway that cuts directly through the Detroit region from the Eastside to the Westside for hundreds of thousands of motorists who use it daily. When the highway was constructed back in the 1990's and the road was was dug below the surface streets above, bridges were installed for all the busy roads that run North/South overtop of 696. Sadly these roughly twenty five foot overpasses have created an opportunity for some in crisis to take their own lives. If not killed by the fall, ending in the path of a vehicle moving at 70 mph will.

Michigan police came up with an idea this week when they were called to help a man threatening suicide. They closed the highway and organized semi-trucks passing through to shorten his potential fall.

Thankfully, the man did not jump and the situation ended as the man walked off the bridge. He was taken by Huntington Woods Police to Beaumont hospital for evaluation.

MSP, Huntington Woods and Oak Park police were all on scene and all had negotiators talking to the man for several hours until it ended peacefully.

Around 4 a.m. 696 was reopened to travelers.
