For the past four years, a professor at the University of Naples has led a robotics research group in their efforts to create a robot that makes pizza. And, so far, he has failed.
Professor Bruno Siciliano has burned through $2.9 million in their efforts to develop the robot and teach it how to toss, knead and add toppings to pizza dough just like a human.
While the robot – named RoDyMan – displays an impressive level of coordination, it just can’t toss the dough without accidentally tearing it to shreds.
The robotics group will continue to work with RoDyMan and improve its technique. The goal is to have a perfect dough-tossing technique in time for the Naples Pizza Festival in May 2018, without burning through too much more money. (Telegraph)
