On June 4, 2018, at approximately 10:20 p.m., members of the Decatur Police Department, Decatur Fire & Rescue, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were dispatched to the DoubleTree Hotel located at 1101 6th Avenue NE, in reference to an explosion.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that William Davis, a guest who was staying at the hotel, caused the explosion after tampering with a canister of butane. Davis's actions caused severe damage to the hotel. Davis also sustained injuries from the explosion and was transported to UAB Hospital.

On June 5, 2018, Detective Macklin was assigned the case and obtained a misdemeanor warrant for Davis for arson in the third degree. Once Davis is released from the hospital, he will be taken into custody and booked into the Morgan County Jail.

"The defendant in the above case is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law."
