Making Alabama: A Bicentennial Traveling Exhibit

Bicentennial Traveling Exhibit coming to Limestone County

Making Alabama: A Bicentennial Traveling Exhibit will be on display at the Athens-Limestone County Public Library from Nov. 5 to Nov. 17. This will be the exhibit’s only stop in Limestone County.

This impressive display blends artistic collages, interactive computer tablets, and an audio medley of song and spoken word to tell the story of Alabama – from becoming a territory to achieving statehood. It also conveys a message of hope about the future.

Making Alabama is on a 19-month tour, visiting every county across Alabama. The exhibit is part of the Alabama Humanities Foundation’s celebration of the state’s bicentennial. “We are honored to be a part of this epic undertaking, and we look forward to the next 19 months as [the exhibit] makes its way through towns and cities across our state,” says AHF Executive Director Armand DeKeyser. “We look forward to the next 19 months as it makes its way through towns and cities across our state.”

In addition to the main exhibit, the library will have crafts and activities for young children, as well as two special presentations on Alabama history. On Nov. 8, for the exhibit’s grand opening, Joyce and Jim Cauthen will talk about and perform old-time fiddle and banjo music starting at 5:00 p.m.. Then, on Nov. 15 at 5:30 p.m., James Pate will talk about early Alabama history and Albert Pickett, the state’s first great historian.

“This is the largest exhibit we’ve ever had at the library,” says Kristopher Reisz, the library’s head of programs and events. “We’ve tried to have something for every Alabamian, from homeschool groups to history buffs to music lovers.”

Making Alabama is free to visit and open during library hours.
