Madison Square Mall opened on August 1, 1984. It had a few anchor stores including Parisian, JC Penney and Castner Knott (anybody else remember them?).
It's most recent renovation was in 2006 but as malls decline all across the nation, it just couldn't hold out.
I remember driving in from the Shoals just to go to the mall on some weekends. My friends and I would just...hang, as teens of our time were wont to do.
Today, it was a wholly different experience: a little nostalgic, a little creepy in its solitude (and abandoned mannequin parts).
It is no longer open to the public, save for JC Penney which closes on the 28th and Sears, which will close on the 29th.
After its impending demolition, there will be a new place to make memories at the forthcoming Mid-City project.
